Starting to Consider Demographics and Psychographics

For the artist Simple Plan, and the song Your Love is a Lie, I have started to think and identify a target group of people who I will be aiming my music video and promotional package at; by specifying the demographics and psychographics of the group, (their typical characteristics, and also their lifestyle and behaviour).

The target group for my chosen artist and song will roughly be people aged between 15 and 25 of both genders equally. This is because the band are quite young and popular with this age group. Although the band can be for any age group, this is the age group most suited and targetted with the songs and style of the music.

I would expect these people to typically be quite casual in their dress sense; and wear branded shoes such as converse or vans. I would assume they would wear skinny jeans or straight leg jeans, with a casual top/hoodie. They may have a band logo on their clothing, for example a plain tshirt with a band name printed onto it. I would also expect the range of people to be generally quite sociable, go to casual parties, occasionally drink alcohol and maybe smoke. I assume the female fans to wear eyeliner and skinny jeans, and perhaps dye their hair quite reguarly. This group of people would most likely shop in stores such as Officers Club, H&M, Newlook and also online stores selling band tshirts and clothing etc. It is likely they will have other music interests in similar bands such as Green Day, Feeder, All Time Low, You Me at Six, Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182 and Boys like Girls etc. The personality of this group in general I would expect to be quite laid back and confident. They would probably listen to music for enjoyment rather than simply on the radio or in the background when doing something.

  1. Well done Hannah - your research and planning shows you to be on course for achieving that target grade of a B for A2.

Your research into demographics and psychographics should help you to consider what will and, perhaps more importantly, what will not, appeal to your target audience.
