The Analysis of my Questionnaire Results

Have you heard of the band, Simple Plan?
For this question, 11 people answered yes and 9 people answered no. This meant that the majority of the people I asked knew of the band that I had chosen. However, it was quite an even result. This means that my band is not extremely popular with the general target audience; which will make it easier for me when coming to make the pack for my music video as I will be able to promote it myself rather than them already being very well known. Although only 11 people answered yes, I was still able to ask the remaining nine people the rest of my questions, as I made sure that my questionnaire had questions which were quite general about the music type, and not directly related to my song choice.

If Yes, do you know their song, ‘Your Love is a Lie’?
This question was directed at the 11 people who answered yes for question 1. Out of these 11 people, 8 of them knew the song, and only 3 did not. This meant that only 8 out of the 20 people I asked knew of my song choice. This is quite good as it means that the song I have chosen is not very well known, however it is known enough for the video to have some relevance. Although it may be well known with people who know of the band, it is not well known in the mainstream current music, which means I have more flexibility when coming to make a music video.

Are you interested in Alternative Rock music?
The reason I asked this question was mainly because I wanted to know if I was wasting anyone’s time or not. If they had answered no to recognising Simple Plan, and no to this question; then I would have ended the questionnaire at this point. 16 people answered yes however, therefore for the rest of my questions; only 16 people answered as I ended the questionnaire with the remaining 4. This also enabled me to see if there was interested in alternative rock in general, so that I knew they would be able to answer the remainder of my questionnaire.

Have you seen any music videos to songs by Simple Plan? If yes, then what was your impression?
Out of the 11 people who had heard of Simple Plan, 6 people had seen at least one of their videos and 5 people had not. This was quite even which means that an average amount of people have seen at least one video. This also confirms that my song choice and artist is not extremely popular, however do have some recognition. From the 6 people who answered yes, their impressions of the video’s were as follows;
Good, sometimes too much areas of performance, like the way they link to the lyrics most of the time, and that they are sometimes quite cliché.

What features would you want to see in a music video for an alternative rock song (or if they know it – Your Love is a Lie)?
This question was an open ended question and some of the suggestions I received were;
Narrative to the lyrics, less areas of performance, but mainly in the chorus or interval, video matching the beat of the music, the right costume and type of actors that fit into the alternative rock style.
I was very pleased with these results as this is what I had thought about myself as what I wanted to include in the video personally.

Should any special affects be included? If so, what?
Out of the 16 people still being questioned, 5 answered yes and 11 answered no. This means that special affects were not very popular amongst the target audience. However, the most popular special affect that was suggested was speed changes to the video; which is not too flamboyant or noticeable. Therefore I will consider this suggestion for my own music video.

Do you think that the video should link directly to the song?
For this question, 11 people answered yes, and only 5 answered no. This clearly shows that a narrative story to the song is the preferred option. I was happy with this as it is the same opinion I had myself on what I would like to do for the video, so I am pleased that it also will appeal to the target audience of my song/artist. The 5 people who answered no preferred the idea of having a video which doesn’t link to the video at all, as they thought that music videos nowadays are too cliché and similar to each other. I will also take this thought into consideration when planning my music video.

Would you prefer the video to have areas of performance from the band or have a video without including the band members?
8 people answered yes for this question, and 8 people answered no. This meant that this question did not help me very much in coming to a decision, as the results were exactly split. This means that I will have to decide myself as to whether or not I have areas of performance, as it would not matter so much which I decide as either way it will appeal to my target audience.

What would you expect the actors in the video to dress/look like?
For this question, the results I received from the 16 people were all very similar. The comments I collected were as follows;
Male - Smart casual clothes, jeans and maybe a plain t shirt with a band logo, styled hair, maybe piercings.
Female – casual clothes, skinny jeans and a vest top/t shirt, styled hair and make-up.
These comments also fit the idea I had in my head myself after I had looked into psychographics and demographics of my target audience; these type of clothes and styles seemed to fit the style of the music, artist and target audience.

Further suggestions?
Most people I asked out of the remaining 16 people didn’t have further suggestions to make for my music video, as they believed they had covered everything in previous questions. However some of the people said that the video should not be too cliché and similar to other videos, and to also differentiate it from the original video to the song.
