Mood Board for Simple Plan - Your Love is a Lie

This is a mood board I have created to represent the band Simple Plan, and the type of music they play. I have incorporated images such as guitars, drums, the american flag, rock magazines, and images of the band themselves etc. This is because I would personally relate these images to the band and it visually shows what style the band fit into and helps see what type of target audience there may be for the rock/alternative rock genre. I have also included some words to emphasise the images further through the use of text.

My Chosen Song

The song I have chosen for my music video out of my three options is Simple Plan - Your Love is a Lie. This is because after going back and reading each of the lyrics for each song, I have decided that these lyrics would most fit the illustration or amplify method of a music video. The lyrics would be able to match visuals to tell a straightforward narrative, and also incorporate areas of performance also. This song also fits into my own personal music taste which is helpful because I have watched music videos to similar types of song and artist.

Potential Song Choice 3

Artist Name: Simple Plan

Album Title: Self titled studio album

Length: 03.41

Release Date: 19th Apr 2008

Genre: Alternative Rock

Lyrics

I fall asleep by the telephone.
It's 2 o'clock and I'm waiting up alone.
And tell me where have you been?

I found a note with another name.
You blow a kiss, but it just don't feel the same.
'Cause I can feel that you're gone.

Can't bite my tongue forever,
While you try to play it cool.
You can hide behind your story,
But don't take me for a fool.

[Chorus]
You can tell me that there's nobody else. [but I feel it]
You can tell me that you're home by yourself. [but I see it]
You can look into my eyes and pretend all you want
But I know, I know, your love is just a...lie. [lie x2]
It's nothing but a...lie. [lie x2]

You look so innocent,
But the guilt in your voice gives you away.
Yeah, you know what I mean.
How does it feel when you kiss when you know that I trust you.
And do you think about me when he fucks you?
Could you be more obscene?

So don't try to say you're sorry,
Or try to make it right.
Don't waste your breath because it's too late, it's too late.

You can tell me that there's nobody else. [but I feel it]
You can tell me that you're home by yourself. [but I see it]
You can look into my eyes and pretend all you want
But i know, i know, your love is just a...lie. [lie] lie [lie]
It's nothing but a...lie [lie] lie [lie]
You're nothing but a LIE!

You can tell me that there's nobody else. [but I feel it]
You can tell me that you're home by yourself. [but I see it]
You can look into my eyes and pretend all you want
but I know, [know x2]
I know, your love is just a lie. [know]
I know, you're nothing but a...lie! [lie!] lie! [lie!]
You're nothing but a...lie! [lie!] lie! [lie!]
Your love is just a...LIE!

Why choose this song?

I chose this song as well because I wanted a variety of genres and styles, and this differs from my other choices. The band Simple Plan are an American band, and although they are quite well known in the US, they are not so wide spread in the UK. This song does already have a video, however it is not as popular anymore as the song is quite old; although still contemporary. I really like the pace of this song, and I think that the pace and lyrics together would work really well in creating a narrative story; which is good as the illustration style of a music video is personally my favourite type of video.

Potential Song Choice 2

Artist Name: Owl City

Album Title: Ocean Eyes

Song Title: Vanilla Twilight

Length: 03.52

Release Date: 26th Jan 2010

Genre: Pop/Electropop

Lyrics

The stars lean down to kiss you
And I lie awake and miss you
Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere

'Cause I'll doze off safe and soundly
But I'll miss your arms around me
I'd send a postcard to you, dear
'Cause I wish you were here

I'll watch the night turn light-blue
But it's not the same without you
Because it takes two to whisper quietly

The silence isn't so bad
'Til I look at my hands and feel sad
'Cause the spaces between my fingers
Are right where yours fit perfectly

I'll find repose in new ways
Though I haven't slept in two days
'Cause cold nostalgia
[From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/o/owl-city-lyrics/vanilla-twilight-lyrics.html]
Chills me to the bone

But drenched in vanilla twilight
I'll sit on the front porch all night
Waist-deep in thought because
When I think of you I don't feel so alone

I don't feel so alone, I don't feel so alone

As many times as I blink
I'll think of you tonight
I'll think of you tonight

When violet eyes get brighter
And heavy wings grow lighter
I'll taste the sky and feel alive again

And I'll forget the world that I knew
But I swear I won't forget you
Oh, if my voice could reach
Back through the past
I'd whisper in your ear
Oh darling, I wish you were here

Why choose this song?

I have chosen this song as a consideration because it is also a contemporary song. The artist was not very well known until his number 1 single 'Fireflies' was introduced to the charts in 2010. However, I have chosen Vanilla Twilight because the lyrics would fit into a narrative and although it is a known song, it is not as popular as other songs by Owl City. The song is quite slow paced which is useful because it could easily fit a story in time with the lyrics and this means that the visuals would match the song. I also quite like the genre of this song, and it is quite unusual at the fact it is electropop, which is not regarded as popular as just pop or rock etc.

Artist Name: Jesse McCartney

Album Title: Departure

Song Title: It's Over

Length: 04.10

Release Date: 17th Nov 2008

Genre: Pop/R&B

Lyrics
We've run out of words we've run out of time
We've run out of reasons really why we together
We both know it's over baby bottom line
It's best we don't even talk at all
Whoa-oh

Don't call me even if I should cross your mind
Hard enough I don't need to hear your voice on my messages
Let's just call it quits it's probably better
So if I'm not returning your calls it's 'cause

'Cause I'm not comin' back I'm closing the door
I used to be trippin' over missin' you but I'm not anymore
I got the picture phone but baby your picture's gone
Couldn't stand to see your smile every time you dialed

'Cause it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryin to erase you from my mind
'cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over

I still wake up every morning quarter to ten
I still eat my cereal right at the kitchen table
I can't even remember how long it's been
No trouble stayin' occupied

Oh they ask about you whenever I come around
I do what I can not to put my business in the streets
Last thing I need's another episode
Keep conversation short and sweet because

'Cause I'm not comin' back I'm closing the door
I used to be trippin' over missin' you but I'm not anymore
I got the picture phone baby your picture's gone
Couldn't stand to see your smile every time you dialed

'Cause it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryin erase you from my mind
Baby 'cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over

You know that it's over when the burnin'
And the yearnin' inside your heart ain't there anymore
And you know that you're through when she don't do to you
And move you like the way she moved ya before

And you wanna pull her close
But your heart has froze
You kiss her but her eyes don't close
Then she goes ill have your heart forever
And it hurts you but you know that it's better

Girl you know it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages messages
I'm tryna erase you from my mind
'Cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over
'Cause it's over
Girl you know it's over this time
So when you call I'm pressin' seven
Don't wanna hear your messages
I'm tryna erase you from my mind
'Cause it's over
I swear girl it's over this time
So don't keep callin' leavin' messages
Don't wanna know where you been
Baby 'cause it's over

Why choose this song?

I believe that this song would be a good choice to create a promotional music video to because it is contemporary, yet not released in the last year; so it is not extremely well known. Also, it is not one of the artist's most famous songs, and the video is not as popular as others. I think that the lyrics would be helpful in creating a narrative, illustrative video; as the topic of the song and the lyrics would fit visuals quite nicely. Also, I think that the beat and pace of the song would be good to match the video in time with the music. The chorus is repeated several times which is quite fast paced which I think would be good to fit similar footage each time to fit with the beat of the music.

Detailed Textual Analysis; Britney Spears - Everytime

Artist: Britney Spears
Track: Everytime
Release Date: May 17th 2004

Context

"Everytime" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears from her fourth album, In the Zone. It was released on May 17, 2004, by Jive Records as the third single from the album. After Spears ended her relationship with pop singer Justin Timberlake, she made friends with her backing vocalist Annet Artani. While Spears composed the music on her piano, she wrote the song with Artani in Italy. It is thought to be Spears's response to Timberlake's 2002 single "Cry Me a River", but she has neither confirmed or denied these rumours. "Everytime" is considered an adult pop ballad with breathy vocals. Its lyrics are intended to signify a plea for forgiveness for hurting a former lover.

"Everytime" was positively received by critics, who liked its simple lyrics and the feel of the song in comparison with most of the tracks of In the Zone. "Everytime" was a big success, peaking inside the top five in most countries, while reaching the top of the charts in Australia, Hungary, Ireland and the United Kingdom. "Everytime" has been covered by artists such as Glen Hansard and Jackie Evancho.

The music video for "Everytime" portrays Spears as a star constantly being harassed by paparazzi, who drowns in her bathtub when she starts bleeding from a wound in her head. In the hospital, doctors fail to resuscitate her while a child is born in the next room, implying she was reincarnated. The original idea for the video would have had Spears killing herself from a drug overdose, but the plot was removed after it received criticism by several organizations, who perceived it as a glamorization of suicide.

Lyrics

Notice me, take my hand
Why are we strangers when
Our love is strong
Why carry on without me

Everytime I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, it's haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

I make believe that you are here
It's the only way I see clear
What have I done
You seem to move on easy

And everytime I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, you're haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

I may have made it rain
Please forgive me
My weakness caused you pain
And this song's my sorry

At night I pray
That soon your face will fade away

And everytime I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, you're haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

Analysis

The opening to the music video is of an aerial shot of Las Vegas at night. This shot sets the scene of the video and suggests a busy hectic atmosphere. Also, Las Vegas is linked with nightclubs and a busy nightlife; therefore the audience may think that this may be involved in the video. It is also clear from this shot that it is filmed from a helicopter due to the sound effects, which also may connote that the helicopter is searching for someone or emphasise the height of the buildings in the scene.

The shot then cross dissolves into another tall building being palms casino resort. Gambling is advertised to be a glamorous activity and very popular in cities such as Las Vegas, which further denotes the busy night life and type of people which would be associated with the city; wealthy people who like to drink and go to clubs at night etc. Directly after this is a shot of a billboard displaying a picture of Britney Spears captioned “Las Vegas”. This introduces the artist to the audience creating the image of glamour due to the way in which the picture of Britney is presented.

The camera then tilts downwards so that the audience can see what is happening beneath the billboard. This fits in with the establishing shot of the city, as paparazzi are instantly in front of the camera and a limousine is the centre focus of the shot. The paparazzi are flashing cameras and taking pictures of the limousine and the camera zooms on the limousine in sync with the paparazzi. This creates a feeling of them closing in on whoever may be in the limo. The flashes of the camera are made very obvious to the viewer and the scene is exaggerated by a slight slow motion. The paparazzi are all wearing black which connotes to the audience that they are the ‘bad guys’ in the video.

The camera then instantly cuts to a two shot of Britney and her boyfriend sitting in what appears to be the limousine. From the Mise-en-scene of the scene, it is obvious that the couple have had an argument and are not talking. This is shown by them staring out of opposite windows and sitting separately from each other. This is further emphasised by Britney tapping her boyfriend, and getting a negative response in which he uses body language to show the viewer they have had an argument. The camera then cuts to a close up of Britney’s reaction to this and shows her shaking her head. This instantly makes the audience sympathise with Britney and feel as though her boyfriend is the one in the wrong. This helps create the mood of the video because the aim is for the audience to feel sorry for Britney.
The camera then switches back to the paparazzi outside the limousine banging on the windows and appearing to be shouting abuse or questions at the couple. The lighting used in this scene is dimmed a little which makes the scene feel more negative against the paparazzi. Again, the slow motion used in this scene means the viewer can see all of the action and how aggressive and desperate the paparazzi are to take the pictures.

The next few shots alternate between Britney and her boyfriend and the paparazzi, showing the contrast between the two. However, the two come together when the couple get out of the limousine and the paparazzi instantly group around them. In one shot, it is clear that Britney gets hit in the head by a camera from the paparazzi. This shot foreshadows what later is to come in the video, therefore the close up helps the audience to remember the scene. The next few parts of the music video are mostly in a slight slow motion. This effect dramatizes the situation for the audience.

Once the paparazzi has left, the camera tracks the couple walking down a corridor, clearly in mid argument as they are pushing each other and their body language shows they are shouting. The corridor is white which represents the hospital scene which is later to come in the video. Also, Britney’s outfit is white which emphasises this point. As the couple enter their flat, they are still arguing and shouting at each other, and a slow motion shot of the boyfriend throwing a glass vase at a wall emphasises the anger of the situation and makes Britney look more innocent compared to him. Shot reverse shots are used as well as close ups of the couple to show their reactions and facial expressions to make their emotions clear to the audience. Their body language is also emphasised and exaggerated to show their feelings towards each other at that point.

The camera then follows Britney as she goes into the bathroom, clearly upset and angry. The camera watches her as she gets into the bath and realises she is bleeding from the head, (the audience will remember her getting hit by the camera previously in the video). The high angle shots used make Britney look vulnerable and under threat. Parallel editing is then used as the camera switches to the boyfriend sitting looking guilty and ashamed on his own. The fact that it is clear Britney is in danger and her boyfriend does not know creates a tense feeling for the audience as they can see both characters and want the boyfriend to find Britney.
The camera then switches occasionally to Britney lip syncing in a white corridor, representing the hospital; as it is clear she is drowning from her head injury in the bath. Typical hospital staff surrounds her and are rushing about, connoting the danger she is in and the fact the hospital are rushing trying to save her life. A bright white light is used to represent the cliché idea of death and ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’.

The camera editing pace gets faster slightly when the boyfriend finds Britney in the bath tub. Cross cutting is used between the hospital and the flat where Britney is unconscious. The paparazzi are brought back in at the end of the video even in the situation Britney is in, which reminds the audience of the beginning of the video. One of the last shots is of a baby in a hospital which represents the idea of reincarnation after Britney’s ‘death’ in the music video. This is then followed by a shot of Britney sitting up in the bath and smiling; which adds confusion to the video and leaves the audience feeling confused about what has happened and why she is now awake.

Britney Spears - Everytime

This is the music video I have chosen to do a detailed analysis on. I will research and write about the context of the music video, look at the lyrics, and analyse the video closely.

Analysis of Audience Research Questionnaire

Audience Research Questionnaire

This is my questionnaire which I have created for my audience research. I have done this so that I can collect information which may help me when it comes to creating my own music video, as the questions I have asked cover how an individual consumes music and what their preferences are. I have used a range of quantitative and qualitative questions to make sure I receive a wide range of answers. I am going to give this questionnaire to approximately 20 different people to answer, and I am going to analyse the results I get for each question and draw a conclusion. I think that this will be very useful to look back upon when planning my music video, as it will give me some insight into what different peoples opinions and tastes are upon the different music videos available, and what they contain.

Brief Textual Analysis of a Music Video

1) Name of Artist? Daniel Powter.

2) Title of Song? Bad Day.

3) Date of Release? 25th July 2005.

4) Director of the video? Marc Webb.

5) What genre of music does this song fall into? Pop.

6) Is there a relationship between lyrics and visuals in the song? Yes, the lyrics are about someone having a bad day and feeling down; the video represents this by actually showing two people who are obviously having a bad day themselves. An example of a section where the lyrics match the visuals is when the lyrics say "the point is they laugh at what you say", and the video shows a shot of people laughing around the male character who is not laughing himself. The lyrics illustrate and amplify the lyrics of the song. They amplify because the video is suggesting a negative mood. However it is also illustrating because the lyrics could directly fit into the feelings of the characters and describe what they are doing or thinking at all stages of the video.

7) Is there a relationship between the music and the visuals? Yes, reguarly throughout the music video there are cuts put into place in time with the beat of the music. Also, the artist is shown playing the piano at a slight interval when a piano is being played in the song. For example, at the very beginning of the music video, the screen is split showing the two characters routines. The clock changes its time fitting into the beat, and the characters move to the beat also (turning the alarm off, rolling over etc). From 1.29 in the video, Daniel Powter is filmed playing the piano which fits in with the music as there is a short interval in which a piano is being played.

8) What is the importance of the artist in the visuals? I think that the artist is important in the visuals because he is almost seen as telling the story himself as he is singing it, and filmed in several sections of the video looking over at what is going on, and contributing towards the negative mood of the song. The image of the artist makes him look like the average man, dressed in jeans, a jacket and a woolen hat; which can make the viewers relate to the video themselves. This type dress is also what Daniel Powter usually wears most of the time, and in some of his other music videos. This means that he is instantly recognisable in the video to people who already know of him.

9) Is there any voyeurism in the video? No, this video contains no voyeurism.

10) Does the video have any intertextuality? No this video does not make reference to or show influence from any other media texts.

11) What is the mixture in the video between performance and narrative? Narrative is more dominant in the music video than performance, as most of the video is taken up by the story of the two characters, which come together at the end. However, occasionally it does switch to the artist who is lip syncing the song or playing the piano. It is structured so that there is a section of performance after most scenes of the story.

My Favourite Music Video

Artist: Daniel Powter

Track: Bad Day

Release Date: July 25th 2005

I like this particular music video because I really like the way that two seperate stories are told and both come together at the end. I like the use of the split screens to show the similarities between the characters going about their day to day lives, and I also like how the video switches from the story, to the artist lip syncing the song. Also, I think that it is clever how the music video shows the two characters adding drawings to a billboard each day, and then at the end of the video this scene is reinacted in real life. As well as this, I like the fact that most likely many people could relate to the story told in this music video.

This video represents the illustration method, as the video links directly to the song and it's lyrics. This is my preferred type of music video, which is another reason why this particular music video is my favourite.

My Own Music Tastes

The types of music I generally like to listen to are; R&B, Rock, Pop, and Hiphop. Some examples of my favourite artists/bands are The Script, P!nk, Simple Plan, Example, Jessie J, Chris Brown, and Eminem; which fall under the four catagories. However, I listen to a variety of different types of music, and generally I do not have specific interest in a certain type of music or a particular genre; however these would be my favourites.

Me as a Consumer of Music

Evaluation of AS Foundation Portfolio

My Strengths and Weaknesses of my own performance and contributions;

I believe that throughout the AS project last year, I contributed significantly towards each stage of the process.

In the research and planning stages, my blog was kept up to date throughout the year with relevant research to the project. I researched into various things such as independent production and distribution companies, film certifications, and what appears in a conventional two minute horror opening. I carried out this research and updated my blog independently, making sure that it was necessary to the project. I also contributed ideas for my group. I thought of ideas for costume, location and the storyboarding for our footage; and we discussed these ideas as a group.

In the construction stages of the task, I think that my own performance was good and I contributed towards each stage of the production from filming to editing. This was always done as a group, as we prepared and met up reguarly to check what we were doing and what time scale we had left etc. I feel that I contributed the most towards the editting of the sound; creating a piece in garage band, and researching into sounds on freesound.org. However I feel that I did not use the camera myself as much as I maybe should have. As I was the main character in the opening, I was mainly being filmed; rather than filming. I only used the camera myself properly when I was filming hand held footage. This means that I think I need more practise and to get more involved with the camera and it's functions. Also, I did not transfer the footage from the camera onto the macs - another member of my group did this. This means that I need to learn and practise on how to do this for when it comes to my music video this year.

For the evaluation stage of the project, I contributed ideas towards all seven of the questions, and helped type them up. I feel as though this was my strong point of the project; as I perform well in written work. My groups evaluation was completed and posted to my blog before the deadline, with all of the requirements fitted in.

Overall, I feel that an area of development and improvement I can take with me for this course would be to make sure I can use the camera and tripod correctly with all of their functions. Also, to improve upon using the software on the apple macs, such as importing the footage onto the macs and exporting the footage as a quicktime movie. I believe that the written work and research stages were my strongest parts of the project, therefore the main area to develop upon would be my camera skills and understanding all of the mac software needed.
